One of the richest archeological and cultural regions in the Middle East, Syria is also home to many ancient religious communities. In Aleppo, HMML has worked extensively with several Christian churches—Armenian Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, Greek Catholic, and Melkite to name a few—with additional projects in Homs and Damascus. The Syrian Orthodox Church of Saint George in Aleppo held a unique copy of the Chronicle of Michael the Great, a 1598 copy of a 12th-century work by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Michael the Syrian (SOAA 00250 S). The recent civil war has dislocated and dispersed the population and destroyed monuments. Manuscript collections have been moved or hidden. As in Iraq, HMML’s digital copies often provide the only access to these important texts.
