HMML started microfilming in Germany in 1978 and finished its last project in 1999, at Metten Abbey (instrumental in the founding of Saint John's Abbey in the 1850s). Some 14,000 manuscripts were filmed in 50 repositories, including major ecclesiastical, monastic, state, and university collections in Bonn, Bremen, Cologne, Erfurt, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg im Breisgau, Giessen, Jena, Mainz, Münster, Rostock, Weimar, and Xanten. The manuscripts covered all areas of research on pre-1600 Central Europe, including several collections from the former East Germany with large numbers of Reformation manuscripts. In addition to pre-modern European materials, hundreds of manuscripts in non-European languages were filmed at the University of Tübingen and significant music collections were filmed at Bonn and Cologne.
